Dermal fillers are soft gels of hyaluronic acid — a sugar the body already makes to hold water in the skin — injected to restore volume, smooth folds and refine facial balance. Because they are gel rather than muscle-relaxant, they do a different job from Botox, and the two are often planned together.
How dermal fillers work
With age we lose fat, bone and collagen, and the face can look flatter or more tired. Filler replaces that lost support and draws in water to plump the area. The result is visible straight away, and modern hyaluronic-acid gels also give the skin some hydration and gentle collagen stimulation over time. We treat the face as architecture first — restoring proportion before adding volume.

What to expect
The area may be numbed with cream, and most modern fillers also contain local anaesthetic, so treatment is comfortable and takes around fifteen to thirty minutes. You can expect some swelling and occasionally minor bruising for a few days. Depending on the product and the area, results last roughly six to eighteen months; because hyaluronic acid is broken down naturally, the change is not permanent and can be topped up.
Safety and side effects
Common side effects are mild and short-lived — swelling, tenderness, redness or bruising, and occasionally small lumps that settle or can be smoothed. One important advantage of hyaluronic-acid filler is that it is reversible: an enzyme (hyaluronidase) can dissolve it if needed. The rare but serious risk is filler entering a blood vessel, which is why filler should only be done by an experienced medical injector who knows facial anatomy and how to manage complications.
